I had no problems accessing and signing into Windows Live Messenger last night. This morning when I tried to open it, i got an error saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I've tried a repair on it and also completely uninstalled it and reinstalled with no luck.

Any idea's or suggestions would be appreciated.

This sounds like another virus thats blocked the msn .exe from running. It also may be a firewall issue, I know you use Zone Alarm, so go and give it full trust and 4 ticks for for normal and server, no need to click the email option.

Then see if that solves it. You can also reset Zone Alarm if you have any further issues.

You were right, it was Zone Alarm. Even though I had set complete access for messenger and then reset Zone Alarm it had once again managed to completely kill my messenger. I'll definately keep an eye on this in the future. Thanks for the help Michael, sorry I didn't get back with you sooner as I had to leave the state for a few days.
