British relatives of people killed in the 9/11 terror attacks have vented their feelings after an al Qaeda conspirator was spared the death penalty.

Zacarias Moussaoui, 37, was the only person charged in the US in connection with the four suicide hijackings which killed nearly 3,000 people.

A court ruled he should spend the rest of his life in jail.

Betty Hilton, whose son-in-law Robin Larkie died in New York's World Trade Centre, said Moussaoui should have paid for his crimes with his life.

"I'm not of the mind that if he had been given the death sentence he would become a hero and a martyr - I would like him to die," she said.

"He ruined the lives of my grandsons and daughter, so why should I feel anything for him?"

Patricia Bingley, whose son Kevin Dennis died, said: "I wanted Bin Laden caught but at least now I've got some satisfaction, when someone is given a life sentence in America that means life.

"We don't really know if he was in on the plan, perhaps he was.

"But he knew a lot about it and he deserves a life sentence for that and that alone."

Charles Berkeley, whose son Graham was on one of the planes flown into the twin towers, said passing the death penalty would have made the terrorist a symbol for other extremists.

"I thought the death sentence would be a mistake and would make him a martyr, that's what he was looking for - the most appropriate sentence was life," he said.

"Life without parole is a big punishment and a deterrent to others."

Ok, My thoughts. If they sentenced this waste of skin to death, he would only be a martre to the cause. The quote that follows, just isn't true, with the state that prisons are in these days...

Life without parole is a big punishment and a deterrent to others.
This guy will prpbably live life high on the hog, safe and well looked after in prison, either that or by some miricle, he will get shived to death.

What do you think?

Life imprisonment as one of the worlds most loathed... I think this will be a very severe sentence - his entire life will be spent confined in a community of criminals who will regard it as their *duty* to inflict the maximum discomfort on him.... killing him would have been kinder.

What burns me is that life in prison in the US isn't all that bad. They have access to so much that they don't deserve.

It's true though that the other inmates will likely make life miserable for him. Even though they have all ben convicted of crimes and we think of them all as not caring about other hunan beings, this man's crime is against the entire country and he will be treated similar to those who commit crimes against children. Even the criminals won't abide certain crimes.

When I first heard the sentence, honestly my immediate reaction too, was just, "oh you're kidding me, kill this A-hole".

I'm still a bit surprised at the jury, I really am, but after thinking about it for a while, maybe life in prison is actually the better sentence.

He probly wanted to die. He probly believes that being killed by his enemy gets him 70 virgins in heaven or something like that. But no, he doesn't get off that easy. He gets to spend the rest of his life in a prison, among American prisoners, and American guards, for helping plan 9/11.

Rapists and murderers and whatever their crimes may be, his fellow prisoners will still be Americans, who watched the towers come down on tv too, and maybe even knew someone lost on that day. The guards assigned to protect him, will be Americans, and I'm willing to bet he will be 'accidentally' left completely alone in the shower room or something quite often.

I'm still not happy that he did not receive a death sentence, but, IF he goes to a real prison, this can be just as good.

I say if he goes to a real prison, because I know hes going to be in protective custody or something for the rest of his life, treated as a special prisoner who must be protected from being killed the first day, even tho I'm sure, and hoping, the guards will still think he deserves some suffering too and just stand by and let it happen once in a while, he better be going to a real prison. Put this guy in Levanworth, or Attica, or Sing Sing, a 'hard' prison, where no matter the protection he has, he will spend every moment of every day for the rest of his life looking over his shoulder. If he winds up in some low population non gang organized country club prison, then I'm going to be really pissed.

Moussaoui is expected to live out his days in the federal prison at Florence, Colo., a grim fortress known as "Supermax" because of the extreme security and isolation it imposes on its inmates. Moussaoui's mother has said she will ask the French government to petition Washington to allow her son to serve his sentence in a French prison, but her petition is not expected to be seriously entertained by the prosecutors who wanted to have him executed.

I saw a story on the news showing what his "cell" would look like. Concrete everything including the bed, although it has a mattress on top of it. Good.

Some of his fellow inmates will include Ramzi Yousef, Eric Rudolph, Ted Kaczynski, Terry Nichols, and Richard Reid, the would-be shoe bomber. But he won't be seeing much of them or anyone else since he will be confined to his cell 23 hours a day. I hope the guards forget to lock the door once in a while.

Hell would be solitary confinement with nothing but prison food loaf (http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/apr/loaf/index.html) for life.

I was very glad with the sentence he had. Yes, I completely agree, life in prison will be much worse than dying. I bet if he have had the death penalty, he would have shouted ''I won'' all the same! I followed the trial once in a while and that Bozo did everything he could to get the death penalty, always provoking and being odious. And think to it, he would have liked so much to be considered as a martyr by his fellow mates and all of those who endorse the same giddily cause. Hey Moussaoui, too bad but YOU LOST!
