Hi - I am having a problem which just began recently. I use Opera 8.54 as my primary browser. I use IE only for Windows updating.

What will happen...I will have several programs open and everything will suddenly completely seize and I can't even bring up the task manager to shut anything down. All I can do is just turn off the computer with the power switch (and hold my breath). I have tried pressing ctrl, alt, delete; tried to access the task manager from the task bar, but nothing works.

When I turn it back on I have white screen with all my desk top icons - instead of my normal blue one - and in between I can make out the words about Active Desktop - and do I want to restore it. I press yes and everything is back to normal. (There are some other words on there to about Internet Explorer but I can't read them all because the are mixed in with the icons and impossible to read).

I have checked the error log when this happens and I get different messages - weird, yes? Here are the three most common:

1. The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer VICKI that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{28A2EAF4-BA66-47D E-9E3. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

2. The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{28A2EAF4- BA66-47DE-9E38-6306C44C99F4}. The backup browser is stopping.

3.DCOM got error "%1053" attempting to start the service NSCService with arguments "" in order to run the server: {09B7ADDC-8BF0-409B-8 571-43E8EA2AAFA3}

I have run every spyware, adware, virus, etc. application I have. They all come up clean.

Initially when I tried to run Ad-aware & Spybot S&D I had a problem - which has never occurred before. In attempting to find a fix for this, I read about dial-a-fix, downloaded that and it solved those problems. (You sure do learn a lot when you run into a problem).

I have XP - service pack 2 - not sure what other information you need.

I use the following security: Norton 2006 antivirus, Outpost Pro firewall, BoClean, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE. All are updated & run regularly.

I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me to stop this freezing problem - or how to safely shut down Windows in such an event. Please - keep in mind -

* I am not very computer literate
* I am a redhead who should have been a blonde

so - simple, easy to follow answers please

Thank you, Sweetie

Hi Sweetie, Glad you finaly made it and welcome to eXPerience Windows.

OK. Is or was your computer ever connected to a network or something called a Domain?

You can tell this by Clicking Start > and Right Clicking My Computer > Select Properties and click the Computer Name Tab...

In that tab, do you see anything that says Domain?

Your problem may occur if the PC has ever been on a network or domain and has something called a Mapped Networked Drive. If you have any mapped networked drives, you can tell by Pressing Start > click My Computer. Look in the list of drives, are there any with a red X through them?

Check these for now and let us know.

Again, welcome.

Michael,

No, there is nothing like you have suggested. All it says there is
your-kybtg65gxe. and it tells me I can give it a name if I wish.

The other thing that is happening - and I am not sure if this is related - but when I log on now - my background loads but my desktop icons do not load onto it - they now load onto just a navy blue screen. I have tried to change the background but it doesn't stay and I don't know why because it always worked before. But it doesn't seem to affect anything so I am not worried about that. Just mentioning it in case it has a bearing on anything. Thank you for your help! I am sooooooo pleased to be here!

Sweetie :)
