Google on Thursday released a beta of its second Toolbar revision for Firefox, adding RSS feed integration with the Google Personalized Homepags and improving search functionality with previous queries, spell checking and suggestions. Toolbar v2 for Firefox also catches mailto links and opens them within Gmail rather than a desktop e-mail client.

"As a dedicated Firefox user, I think that the latest version enhances an already innovative browser. Meanwhile, you IE Toolbar 4 fans may notice that the feature sets aren't identical. That's because Firefox and IE users have different needs," said Google software engineer Justin Voskuhl. "Rest assured that we're working to get the most popular features in both versions."

New features in Firefox Toolbar Version 2

New! Enhanced Search Box
As you type a search query into the new Toolbar's search box, you'll see a list of useful suggestions based on popular Google searches, spelling corrections and your own Toolbar search history and bookmarks. You can also click the 'G' icon in the search box to search different Google sites, the current site, or sites for which you’ve installed custom search buttons.

New! Google Safe Browsing
Previously its own extension, we’ve integrated Google Safe Browsing into Google Toolbar – after all, who wouldn't want it? Google Safe Browsing alerts you if a web page that you visit appears to be asking for your personal or financial information under false pretences. This type of attack, known as phishing or spoofing, is becoming more sophisticated, widespread and dangerous. By combining advanced algorithms with reports about misleading pages from a number of sources, Safe Browsing is often able to automatically warn you when you encounter a page that's trying to trick you into disclosing personal information.

New! Subscribe to Feed
You can now subscribe to your favorite web pages with just one click. Many different websites publish feeds with the latest updates to their sites so that, instead of visiting a website over and over for the latest news, you can use a feed reader to keep track of updates for you. The Toolbar will automatically detect if content of the page you are browsing is available for subscription and enable the “Subscribe” button to notify you. When enabled, simply click "Subscribe" and you'll be taken to your chosen feed reader to confirm the subscription.

New! Send with Gmail
Have you been frustrated because you can’t set Gmail as your default mail client? We’ve solved that problem by adding a feature into Toolbar that automatically opens whenever you click on an email link.

New! Custom Layouts
The Firefox version of Toolbar has always made it easy to put your favorite Toolbar features right where you want them – we’ve taken it one step further and provided three pre-set layouts so that you can arrange the buttons, search boxes, and other browser controls for you to make the best use of space in Firefox.

Testing it out for myself.

The built in phishing filter works, or so I assume. It has a Google test page I can go to, places an icon into the address bar and warns me with a big unmissable message.

Its RSS icon thingy is cute, if you want to add feeds to your Google home page and a few other choices. Would be cool if it also had your external standalone RSS reader program too.

The send with Gmail option is very nice. And actually works, I tested it. Very useful for people like me that actually use Gmail as their default email client, and that Gmail notifier's option for no longer works since IE7.

Its spellckecker is still very good. I love Google toolbar's spellchecker, think its one of the best there is. Almost makes me want to keep the toolbar installed.

Almost. My honest, personal, opinion is, I've had serious memory leak issues with Firefox before that I KNOW were caused by the Google toolbar, and Firefox definitely seems a little sluggish with this new version installed, so I can just assume the problem is even worse now and not better. And I'm still experiencing something like a small 1 second of lag after loading a page that I've always experienced with the Google toolbar installed.

A nice extension with some great features, but for me personally, one I can do without due to its performance problems.

I should clarify and say yes it is a special mmoy SSE2 optimized build of Firefox that I use, which probly has a lot, if not entirely, to do with the performance problems I have with Google Toolbar.

Optimized builds have certain little things and certain code strings removed for optimization, and alot of other code optimization added, so its just a given some extensions will actually require something removed or conflict with something added and cause problems or not work at all.

I should have actually tested it on a official build. Micron should be along shortly with a reply to say its working perfectly for him on a normal official Firefox.

Ive tested this today and its way better than the 1.x versions. I have no issues and in fact it seems to have speeded up my browsing. I like this version.

Also, if you do a search using the toolbar, rather than the actual google.com site, it utalises their new search page...
