Where did you get the theme Chris?
Windows XP wont allow you to change the themes that are stored in C:\windows\Resources\Themes (except the standard ones). You need to download a changed dll or use a program called Style XP (http://www.tgtsoft.com/) which will allow you to use custom visual styles that use the Windows Shell.
Alternatives include Windows Blinds, but its bloated, though gives lovely enhancements.
OK. So talk us through what your doing and we can fix it.

ok, try this:
1) Download the file (Attached Below) and extract in a handy location (eg: your Desktop). This should create a new uxtheme.dll file in that location.
2) Go to C:\WINDOWS\System32 and rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.dll.old
3) Put the new uxtheme.dll into C:\WINDOWS\System32
4) If you get any warnings from Windows stating that an original system file has been replaced, you must click "Cancel", otherwise the new uxtheme.dll will be replaced with the original one.
5) Reboot
This should stop it from crashing. And will also allow you to use newer themes from places like http://www.winmodify.net/
Hope this helps.
