The long awaited, they been promising us this real patch since the game came out, Battlefield 2 1.2 patch has been released.
This patch fixes pretty much everything wrong with the game, or so they hope at least, and fixes a lot of things the previous patches broke.
Its available in two flavors, full patch, which is 385 megs in size, which can be installed on a clean totally unpatched installation of BF2 to bring it up to this version, or an incremental update patch, which is 82 megs, that will patch BF2 1.12 (the last patch) to this version.
The full patch might seem kind of large, but its actually a bit smaller then I thought it would be, and if you don't have a high speed connection, theres really no reason for you to be playing this game online anyway.
I installed the patch last night, just using the incremental update for now, I will worry about getting the full one to keep on a CD later, and played for a couple hours.
You can tell how badly this patch was wanted, because game servers are updating pretty quickly. The game server you play on has to be patched to the same version of your game, a separate server side patch available, and usually servers take a few days or more to apply a new patch and theres always that waiting for a patched server to show up after you patch yourself. This time tho, the servers are patching pretty quickly, and I had plenty to choose from just hours after the patches release.
The changes are definitely positive. Helicopters and jets aren't so extremely over-powerful anymore, and are actually afraid of an anti-aircraft missile lock-on now, the anti-air missiles could barely hit a flying barn door before. The sniper rifles and many other weapons too have become much more accurate and powerful, the sniper rifles especially were horribly inaccurate before. And the server filters actually work now.
But of course, no EA patch will ever not screw stuff up that was fine before too, I think its a tradition with them. All of the weapons are more accurate and powerful now, and I mean ALL of them. It doesn't take very many hits at all to be killed now, and people are dying a lot faster and more often now. Which is ok really, its just going to require people learning a new way to play a bit. And they may have taken care of the super powerful air vehicles, but seem to have accomplished the opposite with ground vehicles. Tanks and armored vehicles now seem 3 times harder to take out, which is kind of messed up.
I won't bother providing download links for the patches here, as I don't think anyone here plays it anyway, and everyone has their own preferred download source. Some download servers are a lot faster then others and some people, like me, will prefer to download the full patch with bit torrent.
If you really don't know where to get the patch, a simple Google search for 'Battlefield 2 patch' will find it for you, and you're looking for the 1.2 patch.
