I just put in a new power supply last week because I couldn't stand the fan noise from the old one. While this one is practically silent, it's got a high pitched squeal sort of sound. Like you get when you have ringing in your ears I guess I would say. Or like the sound old television sets used to make. I hope someone understands what I'm talking about!
I only notice it when everything else around me gets quieter, but it does irritate me. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the squeal? Or can anyone tell me what cuases it? I thought I might pull it out and re-seat everything if that might help.
The PSU is an Antec Smartpower 2.0, 350 watt 12V, push-pull fual fan design.
Thanks for any help.

What your hearing is actually air passing through the fan blades. As its new theres no dust, dead skin and crawly things from stopping the air from hitting the blades, thus, causing the whistle.
It will pass in time. Remember though. Constant movement of a PC will dislodge dust and dirt and this is one of the most common things for PC fans making a noise.
Give it a little more time and let it build up some more cultures lol. Will be ok then.

Okay. I'll be patient with it. It's so damn quiet otherwise!
I just couldn't take the old one. It was so noisy you could hear it from another room. It was a cheap replacement several months ago when my original died - lesson learned about spending a little more money for better performance.

I had this same whistle with my new power supply for a couple weeks. It went away quickly because my apartment is pretty dirty, lol.
My new power supply is an Antec too and is whisper quiet now. They make damn good power supplys.

Sign me up - my study sounds like a railway station from the fan noise - it's driving me cuckoo! :pccrash:

I learned my lesson. I will never again settle for the $25 power supply.
My living room and dining room are basically open to each other so I use them as one big combined room, with the pc in the middle of it all. I could hear that damn fan all over the place and I hated it.

If I'd paid only $25 for my PSU I'd be happier, this is an expensive Thermaltake PSU. Ah well, we live and learn.

Mines powered by a nuclear accelerator, with 15 carbon rods in a water cooled thermal tank. Has a radiation dampening field contained in the inner core to protect me from the hazardous radiation.
All this for a 350 terrawat power supply.

Well I guess I've dirtied it up enough now. It's been a week and it's now lost the god-awful squeal. Yay! :thx:
