It has a bad reputation. It's associated with annoying pop up windows and computer hackers stealing personal information from your computer.
But spyware helped police arrest East Rochester gymnastic instructor Marian Penev on charges of soliciting sex with a 13-year-old girl.
"The situation in East Rochester, their utilizing software that monitors logs where the child has been what doing on Internet reports it back to the parents," said computer consultant Ken Corpus.
Computer consultants tell 8 On Your Side the programs are fairly easy to install, cost less than fifty dollars, and can be purchased right off the Internet.
"Some software actually sends email to parents, so all they have to do is read their email and they see a date and a time and what child was doing," said Corpus.
Computer programs like CyberSitter, NetNanny, and CyberPatrol are just a few software programs that help you monitor your child's Internet use without them knowing.
"If a child is left in front of a computer with unfiltered access to the Internet they can get in trouble fairly quickly," Corpus said.
Investigator Andrew White with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department is part of an ongoing online investigation of child predators and says parents need to pay close attention to what children are doing while on the Internet, specifically in chat rooms.
"A parent would never let a child speak to a 24, 30, or 40 year old man on the phone. They just wouldn't do it. But parents seem to think its okay to let child go on the Internet and chat unsupervised," said Investigator White.
These software programs advertise they can stop pornographic material from entering your system, stop illegal sharing and protect your personal information.
