Immediate Action needed if you have a Cell Phone (assumed only in the States), On January 26th, your cell phone number will be released to Telemarketing Companies. Which means you will start receiving sales calls. If you do not want to be annoyed by these calls and possibly charged for them, you need to make a simple call to 888-382-1222 from your Cell Phone or go online at www.donotcall.gov to register your number. The way I understand it, this will block your number for 5 years. If you choose to make the call, just follow the prompts, should only take minutes of your time.

This is kind of old and innacurate. You probly got this as an email forward from soemone.

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you an opportunity to limit the telemarketing calls you receive. Once you register your phone number, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days (starting January 1, 2005) from the date you register to stop calling you.

For accurate info see :

all I know is what the email from my corporate office said. My home phone is already on the do not call list but not my cell until later today

I included cell phone numbers when I registered for the Do Not Call lists a couple of years ago. Need to add my new number though.

And I already do get telemarketing calls from University of Phoenix. I've had t practically threaten them to get it to stop. I've since learned what number to ignore - nice that cells come with caller ID at no charge!

On same page I link to :

What Phone Numbers Can I Register?

10. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

Emails claiming this with different dates have been going around for a while, but the fact is all cell phone numbers are listed unless specified as an unlisted number, so telemarketers can already find the cell number if they want to, but they can't call cell phones. Not supposed to anyway.

Your corporate office fell for it. Urban legend: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp

However, it would probably be a good idea to register anyway - it's free.

Comments: While it's true that the major wireless phone providers (Verizon excepted) have announced their intention to establish a 411 directory of customers' cell phone numbers beginning in 2006, it is not true that they plan to "publish" said directory for any and all to read. Participating companies say the numbers will be made available only with customer consent, and only via telephone to users who dial directory assistance and pay a fee.

The companies swear the numbers will never be accessible to telemarketers. In fact, per FCC regulations, telemarketers are already prohibited from calling cell phone numbers using automated dialers, which are standard in the industry.
