OK, my girlfriends laptop makes weird beeps and squeeks when she presses certain keys on her keyboard, for example when she holds in shift and presses the @ key it makes a silly noise. how do you change this so that it doesnt make any noise?
are the settings in the control panel or anything?
Cheers, Geoff

Hi Geoff,
welcome to Experience Windows!
What make is her laptop? Has it exhibited this behaviour from day one or only since changing themes for example?
Is the noise generated only when using certain applications or is it not application specific (i.e. do you get the same results when using the key combination in Notepad for example)?
What is the operating system she is using?

Hi, sorry i was not very specific was i lol, im not sure of the make but its only started doing it recently, and it does it in any programme. She's using windows XP home edition. It makes the beeping noise whenever she presses either Ctl, Alt, Shift, Num Lock, Caps lock and the windows button. Its really strange.
Thanks for the reply

OK thanks for that..
Does the Ctl-Alt-Delete function work irrespective or are these functions unavailable? Is the sound the only problem?

The first thing I would try, is to turn off system beeps in Windows. These are beeps made by the computer itself, can not be totally turned off in the standard sounds panel.
This can be easily done in XP with just a quick trip into the registry. Follow these steps exactly.
1. Click the Start button, and open a Run box, or just hit the Windows key and R.
2. Type regedit and hit ok / enter.
3. Navigate using the left panel by clicking sections to expand and view their subsections, and navigate to the following specific key.
hkey current user / control panel / sound / beep
4. Double click on the entry on the right panel named beep. Now simply change the entered yes to no. Click ok / enter.
5. Close registry editor, you are done. You may now need to log off and or reboot the pc for the change to take affect.
But that should do it. Let us know if it does.
