I'm curious, I know I have Windows XP ( Home Edition ) SP2. Why is it when I go to the Java test page or the Windows Media Player download page they both tell me my OS is Win 2000 ?

Hmm, odd. Using what browser? Are you altering your UserAgent ID in any way? Such as how Opera can identify itself as IE, and Firefox can do the same with an extension.

It's doing this in Firefox, I have just the basic install with Mr. Tech and one theme. I haven't altered anything, I've only added your speed tweak a while back.
I'm pretty sure it did it with IE6 (before I started using FF) but now I see it's ok with IE7.

Try running Firefox in safe mode, Start menu, All Programs, Mozilla Firefox, Firefox (Safe Mode), and see if it still does it.
All this does basically is run Firefox without any of the extensions running. It could be Mr. Tech, as I think, its been a while since I've used that extension so forget really and could be wrong, that one of the things the Mr Tech extension does is alter the browser's UserAgent ID version number to allow installing of incompatible extensions.
Edit : Or actually, just click Help on top of Firefox, and then About. What does it say there at the bottom? Such as mine says Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1.
What exactly does yours say there?
And then, also go the address bar, type about:config, and then filter by useragent, and double check. What does it say here on yours?

Hey xpgeek , thanks for the help.
I tried the java test with Firefox in 'safe mode' and it still says Windows 2000.
Here's the screen shots.

Well it must be a problem with the java test itself. Because your Firefox About box there shows [s:bb49c3565e]Windows NT 5.0, which is XP[/s:bb49c3565e], and your other settings are fine.
You said it works in Internet Explorer correctly tho?

Yea IE7 is ok.
It also does it at the Windows Media Player download page, no big deal though, just one of those curiosities.

[s:d027d65f3b]Well it says OS version : 5.0 there too, and NT 5.0 IS windows XP, so, weird.[/s:d027d65f3b]
But, it could be your java version there too, says its version 1.6.0, which is wayy old. Don't know why it says thats the latest version, because its certainly not.
The latest official version is Version 5.0 Update 10.
Available here (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp).
Or 6.0 if want the newer totally resigned version not officially released yet. Runs much better then 5.0 and uses alot less system resources too.
Available here (https://sdlc3b.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=34D9F7E64A22787342CB8 117630A4CA2).
Don't know what java test site you're using, but I use this one.

That is the Java 6.0, I got it here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) when it was first available. I have noticed some glitches here and there, ie some pages with applets not working right.
The Java test I use is here. (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml)
I noticed a while back a couple of things in MS Office that were left out of the original factory install, could there be something there ? It's a Dell Dimension....who knows, lol.

You're right, Sun Java 6.0 is labeled as 1.6.0 on the tests, same for me.
But, I just realized something too, I've been giving you the wrong information, Windows NT 5.0 is Windows 2000 actually, Windows XP is 5.1. So it is your Firefox itself detecting your OS wrong.
NT Ver. - Marketing Name
NT 3.1 - Windows NT 3.1
NT 3.5 - Windows NT 3.5
NT 3.51 - Windows NT 3.51
NT 4.0 - Windows NT 4.0
NT 5.0 - Windows 2000
NT 5.1 - Windows XP
NT 5.2 - Windows Server 2003 / Windows XP (x64)
NT 6.0 - Windows Vista
So the problem is your Firefox itself, because your Firefox About box says 5.0 too.
Are you running Firefox in compatibility mode ? When you right click on the shortcut used to launch Firefox and check the box for run this program in compatibility mode for .. and choose another version of Windows.
Check that now.

Dang !!! That's it, the compatibility mode was set to Windows 2000 !!
That's strange, it's something I wouldn't have messed with when I got FF.
Another one solved, thanks.

Now I remember why I set the compatibility mode for Firefox to Win 2000, it's the only way I can get the Shockwave Player to work in FF.
One of those things.
