At about 2:30 AM my time, EST, last night, I was knocked off MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and Google Talk all in the same instant, and couldn't reconnect to any of them.
I opened my browser, and Google home page was down, as was Yahoo's and MSN's. Hmm what the heck. Tried some other sites, half of my bookmarked sites down too, but half are fine, what the heck. Opened a command window and pinged a few sites, no response whatsoever from Google or Yahoo and every other site I tried, but IMDB, Apple, many others working fine.
Finally figured oh well the cable company is doing some maintenance in the middle of the night when not many people are on and I went to sleep.
I awoke and turned back on the PC, everything working fine now, and thought little more of it. Until I checked some forums and discovered many, many, other people had similar problems throughout the night as well.
Some highlights from a message thread on Neowin forums titled 'Google and Yahoo down?'.
My ISP's DNS server just went down within the past 15 minutes, I don't know if that might be related.
Someone tripped over a wire. Verizon & Comcast DNS just went down too.
I am having all sorts of problems. All sites going up and down. Cant get on warcraft. And friends are having the same problems.
Yes they are down. google and several other websites are down. msn and all my computer pages like this one works fine. Weird very weird. yahoo works also. weird. seems like some dns problems then if some people can view them.
this is interesting.
well google.com just came back up but gmail is down still.
google is also down for me
edit: seems to be up, but its been fluctuating.
From Australia,I was unable to reach :
Neowin, Firefox & Mozilla websites, Apple and a handful of other US websites.
I think the Level3 backbone went down. Haven't seen any news on anything yet...
i keep going up and down
weird
the whole internet is being effected?
From what I gathered, Level3 went down for about 10 minutes, effectively cutting off access to a massive chunk of the internet. Everyone I know had, at the very least, DNS go down. All the big sites went down, ZDNet, Google, Yahoo, the 4.2.2.x DNS Servers, and tons more. It also left my entire company high and dry on their server (which handles realtime scientific data from out in the field via satellite). I'm rather surprised there's no slashdot article up on this; It hit me hard, I've got a load of work to do to get everything caught back up
google works fine with me but yahoo messenger won't login, guess servers are busy or down
perhaps this is why?
Level 3 and Verio have been having latency problems recently
Slashdot article :
xbmodder writes "Two tier one ISPs are down today. At about 23:30PST both Verio and Level 3 starting having problems with routes. According to Level 3 this is a software upgrade gone awry" Many, many reports about this are coming in, and if you're wondering why the stories were rather sparse overnight, it's because it's difficult to post them without internet access. Hope everyone else is back online too.
And my reply to it :
This happened to me last night too, Google, Yahoo, MSN, (and their messengers), tho Aol Aim was still up, and a score of other sites too down for me for hours. Thought it was my cable company (Cablevision) doing maintenance.
Its also made Digg.com frontpage :
