Tempremental card reader

I have a multi card reader built into my pc. When i put in a mem card it reads fine and a littl red light blinks, but sometimes when its removed then replaced its not read at the light doesnt flash. I know its wired into usb on the m-board and have changed the setting so the usbs are always on (no low power mode). Its classed as my 'e' drive. I thought it used to not read again because i used to click on "remove device safely" in the sys tray, and when the card was removed and replaced the e drive was missing so had to re-boot. Now even if i remove the card without clicking the icon in sys tray so the e drive is still visable, and i replace card its still not read and have to re-boot. Are there more setting i have to adjust? Its just a little anoying more than anything as have to reboot when replacing or changing cards
