hi there im useing xp home and ive just formatted my external harddrive i plugged the hardrive back in and when i go to device manager it says installed and working but then i click on my computer the external drive doesnt show up please can you help

How did you originally format it, via Disk Management in Windows XP, and does it appear in Disk Management when connected to your computer?

External HDDs (generally) come formatted as FAT32, did you then convert that to NTFS?

If it is a USB connection, have you tried another USB port on your computer?

Also have you tried connecting it too another computer to see if it works on that?

If it still dosent show up, go back into Disk Manager (Press Start Button > Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management) Look for your drive in the list, Right click it and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Choose a drive letter (K for example) and click ok.

Your drive should now show up.

This also works for USB sticks that sometimes cannot be found.
