View Full Version : Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP

Made a mess installing itself. Created 4 folders with seemingly random numbered folder names on the root of my Windows drive when it installed. I deleted them after and all seems fine.

It automatically added every media folder it could find for automatic media library monitoring, including my pictures folder. Why would I want to view my pictures through Windows Media Player?

And it still has the option 'Delete files from computer when deleted from library' checked by default. It really shouldn't be. Wound up deleting 9 gigs of music by accident with Windows Media Player 11 beta if anyone remembers that. Thank god I had just backed em up not a week before. Even with the option unchecked, it gives me a message box now when I do delete something from it asking me if I want to delete from library only or library and computer. I assume, and would hope anyway, that the same box appears with the option still checked too. Either way, be careful deleting things from its library.

And still no 24 bit sound output option. I sent them several feedback feature suggestions while it was in beta about this. A lot of people, like me, have 24 bit soundcards now like the Creative X-Fi, and many other media players, like Winamp and Apollo player, now have the option to output 24 bit sound instead of 16. If you have a 24 bit soundcard, actually playing the music in 24 bit sounds amazing compared to standard 16 bit.

Not a horrible upgrade from 10. I only installed it really as I figured the Windows Media content that I watch in a web browser using the mini Windows Media player might actually look better with the upgrade. Thats the only thing I used Windows Media player for before, and now especially with no 24 bit sound option for music, its still the only thing I'm going to use it for.

What do other people think of it?

I agree. I tried it a while back and needless to say, it didn't stay on my computer for more than an hour. I use mine for everything from listening to watching dvd's that we rent. I found WMP 11 harder to navigate through since everything was loaded into it instead of just what I wanted. I think I'll stick with WMP 10 for now.

Installed it last night, and had no problems with it so far, have played DVDs and AVI files, I actually quite like it, a bit of a change from WMP 10.

I've had it installed for about a week now.. Installed fine.. Still doesn't have .ogg support tho.. : ( Ilike alot of the features except 'URGE' don't really need it. so *poof* uninstalled. but I found the same issue with it that A.W. found. the navigation for MP11 still leaves alot of room for improvement.

What a bloody mess !! lol

I decided to try to get it through Windows Update, everything seemed fine until the download was complete then there were error after error.

"This application has failed to start because WMDRMSDK.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may solve this problem."

Then after that when I tried to start it to see if it would correct this I got,

"The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0,5721.5145 where 10.0.0.3646 was expected. Windows Media player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.
Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft Web Site ?"

So I said yes and downloaded the offline installer. But then I got,

"It was not possible to complete setup................."

I have been reading about some work-arounds involving WinRAR for this but my copy of Windows is legit so I don't see what gives. So I rolled back to WMP 10 for now.

I guess there is a package of dll's here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913800) with wmdrmsdk.dll in it but it's not really for the same problem.

Any thoughts ?

Try removing WMP 10 with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and run WMP 11 setup again.

Installer Cleanup is here: http://www.experiencewindows.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5987#5987

Merry Christmas Odidio.

I have the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but it doesn't list WMP 10.

I tried a few things I read about on the net but still couldn't install.

I downloaded the wmdrmsdk.dll and placed it in system 32, the install almost completed but then said it couldn't find MFPlat.dll. I downloaded that dll and then the error,

" The procedure entry point MFPlatformStartup could not be found in the dynamic link lebrary MFPlat.dll."

Note if it helps: mfplat.dll is NOT Registerable ( from another site ).

Someone suggested unpacking the installer and run Wmfdist.exe to fix this but that was denied.

Guess I'll have to stick with WMP 10.

Would reinstalling 10 over the old one fix anything ?

There's some kind of WMP11 Integrator here (http://wud.jcarle.com/) but I'm not up to trying that yet, lol.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having trouble with this blasted thing

" The procedure entry point MFPlatformStartup could not be found in the dynamic link lebrary MFPlat.dll." ~odidio

I am curious as to if and how you solved the problem. I finally got fed up with wmp11 and removed it from my system; however, the rollback feature to version 9 ended up not working and several files were corrupted. Now when I try to reinstall version 9, I'm getting the exact same problem you mentioned odidio. I had to copy WMDRMSDK.DLL to the system folder to get past the first hump, now I'm stuck on MFPlat.DLL.

My email and msn messenger info should both be available on my user info page (el_rocio_es_bueno@hotmail.com either way if it's not hehe). Would appreciate it if anyone could toss me an assist.

Thanks all and gogo first post :D[quote]

Hi el_rocio

Welcome to EW

To work around this problem, you must replace the MFPlat.dll file in your %windir%\System32 with the correct MFPlat.dll file that is located in your %windir%\System32\Dllcache folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

Type the following command exactly at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:

copy %windir%\system32\dllcache\MFPlat.dll %windir%\system32

Note: Type y (yes) when you are prompted to overwrite the file.
Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the command prompt.

Ok just tried it, and still no luck... it's coming back with "cannot find file specified." I'm not seeing a folder called "Dllcache" in my system32 folder either. Are you sure about the command you posted? I copied it over letter for letter but it's always possible I did something wrong as I'm fairly new to this ;)

*edit: Scratch that last bit, what I meant to say was I'm looking at the dllcache folder and not seeing that file. I've tried downloading it from the web and copying it from both of my roommates' computers but I guess Microsoft's file protection stuff is better than I give them credit for because the file copied from an external source isn't working =P

Hi Again.

You can download the file from here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfplat then copy it to the System32 folder.

This should fix the problem.

That's unfortunately the first thing I tried. Downloading the file from the web as well as copying the file from my roommate's computer didn't work. Any other suggestions? I feel like I'm getting closer to a solution but not quite there yet =P

Hey el_rocio and welcome, sorry for the late response but I was away.

I gave up and rolled back to #10 with no problems.

One question, did you also get rid of 'Microsoft User-Mode Driver Frameworks Feature Pack 1.0' from add/remove ?

el_rocio
12-01-2007, 08:14 AM
Nope, didn't remove it... although I'm not even seeing it listed under add/remove under any programs or updates. If that's something that needs to be removed I'd say it's already gone. And if it's something that needs to still be there then let me know how to go about reinstalling it =P

I'm still stuck on MFPlat.DLL regardless of what version of WMP I try to install. I initially had 9, then it was wiped when I attempted to install 11 (and the rollback feature didn't work correctly either). Now when I try to reinstall either version 9 or 10 I get that same error with that particular .DLL file. I've downloaded the file from different sites with no success as well as copied the file from one of my roommate's computers. Checked the Dllcache folder and there's no backup of it there. I'm starting to think maybe there's another problem on my end besides the file itself. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks :D

Ok just had a thought... (someone call the papers this is a rare occasion I assure you).

The root of my troubles seems to be this MFPlat.DLL file. When I download this file from the web or from my roommate's computer (he's running wmp11 already just fyi) the version number is 11.0.5358.4827. I'm wondering, does this version 11.0.whatever mean it's associated with wmp version 11 only? If so, again I'm wondering if perhaps there is a version of this file somewhere with an appropriate version for wmp9 or 10. If this is a possibility and anyone reading this thread is running wmp9 or 10 and could check the file version of MFPlat.DLL for me I'd appreciate it (and would appreciate it more if you could email it to me at el_rocio_es_bueno@hotmail.com). Thanks again everyone! :D

Just as a side note, I'm just getting in at about 8:30am from pulling a double shift at work so it's entirely possible I'm insane from lack of sleep. Feel free to let me know if this is the case as well ;)

The complete uninstall for WMP 11 is here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlay er)
(see the note there at the bottom if you use ccleaner)

I don't think you need those dll's when you roll back. I deleted the ones I manually installed when I tried to get wmp11. I did a search today for MFPlat.DLL just to see & it's not on my PC.

So did you ever get this problem fixed ?
I'd like to know if I decide to try installing WMP 11 again.

Does anyone have a fix for this? I have the same problem wmdrmsdk.dll, mfplat.dll, no procedure entry point found...

FWIW, whatever it is, is probably affecting the zune install, too (I just want to hook my xbox360 to my PC).

Hi Arrrrrgh - welcome to Experience Windows. We sympathise totally. I read this thread and have resisted all temptation to install WMP 11.

However: theres a possibility that unpacking the main setup file with WinRAR and running wmfdist11.exe can cure the problem.

Have a go and let us know how you get on.

EDIT: You'll laugh - I am updating to WMP 10 right now (I use Winamp).

Arrrgh
15-06-2007, 05:47 PM
YES!!!!! winRAR + some DLL downloads did the trick...sort of. (A big thank you, without sarcasm)

WMP 11 is now installed, but I can't get the WMP Network Sharing Service to work. I don't even know how to figure out what is wrong with it.

No, not laughing-crying would almost be appropriate-I've been up for 36 hours trying to get it to work. Also, I used to have Winamp (got rid of it to cut down on bloat), and had WMP 10 (just want to hook PC to Xbox 360; I don't have the media center PC).

:D Pleased!

Happy to help.

Now the WMP Network sharing service: what are the symptoms? Do you get any error messages? Hanging?

Arrrgh
15-06-2007, 09:12 PM
The only log I can find right now is (I don't know where else I can look, other logs are unavailable because they are currently in use by a program): My Computer/right click/manage/system tools/event viewer/system/right click/properties

Event Type: Error
Event Source: WMPNetworkSvc
Event Category: None
Event ID: 14322
Date: 6/15/2007
Time: 9:04:12 AM
User: N/A
Computer: xxxxxxxxxxx
Description:
Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' did not start correctly because MFStartup encountered error '0xc00d36e3'. If possible, reinstall Windows Media Player.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp

After the method and difficulty with which I installed WMP, I cannot fathom that a rollback/re-install will work, and the error message leads me to references with Vista (I have XP SP2...???) and MSDE (???)

Arrrgh
15-06-2007, 09:20 PM
Symptoms are: WMP Network Sharing Service will start, but cease very soon after. As a result, WMP does not detect my Xbox.

*UPnP service is started, enabled in router
*SSDP service is started
*Windows Firewall has appropriate ports opened

Arrrgh, welcome to our group. As far as hooking up Xbox and such, no clue here, but after reading thread I had to go and look and see what version I had on this PC, and it is 11, and it works just fine. No errors what so ever. Guess I will have to explore this WMP Network Sharing Service

Looking on the MSDN site I find this clippet:

From the documentation for MFStartup:

Requirements: requires Windows Vista.

And yet there seem to be many out there who have connected their Xbox and WMP11 on XP...

So moving on:

You only mention two services there Aaaargh, there are three that are essential to the functioning of the WMP Network Sharing Service:

SSDP
UPnP Host
HTTP SSL

Could you check all of these are enabled.

Arrrgh
18-06-2007, 12:14 PM
Oops...yeah, all three services are running.

I just found out I've got a bad block in my recovery partition...I'm guessing that it corrupted my XP when I did a complete recovery a while back.

FisionChips
18-06-2007, 12:26 PM
Hi Do you have the original recovery disk?

Arrrgh
19-06-2007, 04:46 AM
I have a small stack of HP recovery discs that shipped with the computer (purchased at Best Buy), but my wife is convinced I ruined it (the computer/hard disk), and will be upset beyond belief  if I do anything major to the computer (like a re-install) . So I thank you kindly for your assistance...I will just end up backing up my files, and getting a new computer.
